FAQ Heat pump hot water cylinders

How much does a heat pump hot water cylinder cost?

They are not the same as a normal hot water cylinder. There is a normal cylinder and a heat pump unit stuck together. So the cost of them varies from $2000-$7000; the cost of a unit increases with volume and use. The majority use R290 (propane) refrigerant, so their efficiencies are close together.

How much money will a heat pump hot water cylinder save me?

The running costs of the water heating unit are the most efficient on the market.

“A family of five can often save $1,000+ per year on hot water costs by switching from a gas infinity system to an R290 heat pump hot water cylinder.”

Can a heat pump hot water cylinder replace my existing hot water cylinder?

Retrofit suitability is on the market – if you have over 220L storage, there are units that can connect to the existing system and act as a heating unit and circulate the water from the unit to the cylinder.

Outdoor installations are easier and cheaper where inside units (2 parts) take less outside space and can be closer to the kitchen/bathroom in the house.

Outside, you need around 750mm wide by 2m roughly space with good airflow to allow the system to work efficiently.

Plumbing installations start from $3000; with electrical, it requires the heat pump unit to be wired in and the cylinder element wired in with a 3kW supply. Many other installers miss this point and won’t allow the cylinder to act with a booster to ensure the unit can heat on its quickest modes.

Are heat pump hot water cylinders worth it in New Zealand?

The cost savings are more than enough for it to be worth it in nz, the units are designed to work in our environments, the efficiency isn’t as high as it would be if it were warm, but using R290 re fridgerant will allow the unit to operate at -10°C.

Simply put, 1Kw of power in gives you 4Kw of hot water in the efficiency scale. Normal electric give you a ratio of 1:1.

The units are extremely reliable as it is the basic system of a cylinder of hot water with an extra way of heating water. This is a reliable, easy system.

Return on investment usually takes a few years, but with no costs of LPG bottles or gas line systems, it’ll feel immediate.

What size heat pump hot water cylinder do I need?

Household size, number of bathrooms, peak load. All of this is used to calculate the right size unit. The storage of the hot water unit is the main focus. Most heating units all sit within the same range for hot water heating for domestic hot water supplies, but with a smaller cylinder (190L minimum), you have a limited amount of hot water. The larger volume creates a larger amount of stored hot water, and with this, this acts as a larger mass of heat so will retain its heat once heated up. It is always recommended to store a minimum of 270L to ensure the efficiency of hot water is used in the mass of the cylinder and not using the heat pump too much.
